Stu here! I want to tell you a little story.
In 2008 I was a shop manager for a bike shop that sold e-bikes. I was there for a short time at this shop because before I owned my own business I moved around a lot. So at this particular shop I was very surprised the owner thought he could have a shop with e-bikes… It was unheard of at that time. Remember, this was 10+ years ago so at that time there were only a handful of companies coming to the market with ebikes and the economy was in a dark hole. So a lot of the ebikes were very poor in quality because lithium-ion was not very popular yet so a lot of ebikes were equipped with nickel metal hydride batteries or even with led acid batteries. When I look back at that time I feel like we were working on the Ford Model T and using a crank to start the motor. It was a tough time to persuade consumers that an e-bike was a good purchase. So inevitably that shop did not last. The positive side to that experience was the eye opening world of ebike repair. There were only a handful of mechanics in the US who were servicing ebikes 12 years ago.
At this very moment I am juggling all the memories of ebike repairs over the years and how they evolved me into a better ebike mechanic.
Fast forward to today… I am still working on ebikes but at a volume I couldn’t ever imagined. If you asked me 12 years ago if I thought the US would be importing ebikes 100% year after year I would have thought you were crazy. And we see this growth first hand at our shop.
So when we service all the ebikes in our shop we talk to the customer and get the run down of it and most of the time we find out they desire a more affordable ebike. So they look to me for an answer.
I have searched high and low on the internet and looked at every possible ebike option and I always come up with the lowest priced ebike for $1500. Now, you can always go with the bottom of the barrel department store ebike which go for $700. So this is the pattern I see: people want a lower price option but they end up with an over priced ebike. With my repeated experience of seeing the customer’s frustration I wanted a better solution. So that is what I set out to do. I sourced ebike conversion kits starting at $699 installed! And complete ebikes starting at $899!
I am sourcing all of our ebike products directly from China. After many months of research I found that all the domestic brand ebikes are higher price because it has to go through many hands. That means the product I have comes straight from the factory. I have never seen a cardboard box so clean because it was only in one shipping container. The products I picked to sell in the shop are products that I believe in and have worked on before.
Honestly, I was never excited to sell bikes because my focus was to solve the repair problem in the community. I am confident this business has solved that issue by the continued support from all of our returning customers. I will never change our top notch repair service. With that said, I want to venture out on a limb and conquer an ever growing consumer demand for ebikes.
So just like the early years of the Ford Model T …no one could imagine how many cars would be made many years later…. And now the ebikes are following on that same path.
